Cuba overwhelmingly approved a sweeping “family law” that would allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt. More than 3.9 million voters – 66.9 percent – voted to ratify the new law. As a travel advisor and wedding planner, I have the privilege of exploring the world's most beautiful destinations, and few places have captured my heart quite like Cuba. Its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and warm, welcoming people make it a truly special destination.

Here are ten reasons why I believe Cuba is an exceptional choice for LGBTQIA+2 travelers.

1.Welcoming Atmosphere: Despite its historical challenges, Cuba has made significant strides in LGBTQIA+2 rights. The Cuban people are some of the most friendly and welcoming, and the community is increasingly visible and accepted throughout Cuba but nowhere more so than in urban areas like Havana.

2. Rich Cultural Heritage: Cuba's culture is a unique blend of African, Spanish, and Caribbean influences. This cultural diversity is reflected in the country's music, such as salsa and son, dances like rumba and mambo, and vibrant art forms, offering travelers a vibrant and enriching experience.

3. LGBTQIA+2-Friendly Events: Cuba is a land of festivals and celebrations and host to several LGBTQIA+2 events each year making it an exciting destination year-round. Havana's Pride Parade which is a major highlight, draws an estimated 10,000 attendees. The annual Jornada Contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia (Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) features various festivities, including educational workshops, artistic performances, and public discussions, further promoting acceptance and understanding within the community. Beyond the Pride events, there's the Havana Biennial, an international art festival that attracts a diverse crowd, and the Santiago de Cuba Carnival, known for its vibrant parades and music. These events offer LGBTQIA+2 travelers a chance to immerse themselves in Cuba's rich cultural tapestry.

4. Getting Married in Cuba

5. Nightlife and Entertainment: Havana's nightlife is legendary, where there is no shortage of LGBTQIA+2- friendly bars, clubs, and cabarets. La Esquina de Tejas and Cabaret Las Vegas are popular spots where you can dance the night away in a lively, accepting atmosphere.

6. Beautiful Beaches: Cuba boasts some of the Caribbean's most stunning beaches, such as Varadero, Cayo Coco, and Playa Ancón. These pristine spots offer LGBTQIA+2S travelers a relaxing and safe environment to unwind and enjoy the sun. Varadero, has 20 kilometers of powdery white sand and turquoise waters, and is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Cayo Coco, part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago, is renowned for its clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Playa Ancón, near the colonial town of Trinidad, offers a more tranquil setting with fewer crowds and spectacular sunsets. Many of these beaches are adjacent to LGBTQIA+2S-friendly resorts that provide inclusive services and amenities. Whether you're seeking adventure in the water or simply looking to relax on the shore, Cuba's beaches provide an idyllic escape for LGBTQIA+2S travelers.

7. Historic Architecture:The breathtaking colonial architecture in cities like Havana and Trinidad are well worth exploring. Walking these streets is like stepping back in time.

8. Culinary Delights: Cuban cuisine is a fusion of flavors, reflecting its rich cultural heritage. Traditional dishes such as ropa vieja, a savory shredded beef stew, and lechón asado, succulent roasted pork, are must-tries that highlight the island's Spanish and African influences. Street food enthusiasts will love sampling local favorites like empanadas, croquetas, and the famous Cuban sandwich, packed with ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all pressed to perfection. Seafood lovers are also in for a treat with fresh catches like lobster, shrimp, and fish prepared with a tropical flair. For a unique taste of Cuba, try ajiaco, a hearty stew made with a mix of meats and root vegetables, or moros y cristianos, a savory blend of black beans and rice. For me the big draw in Cuba is the vast variety of local fruits like mangoes, guavas, and pineapples, which are often used in refreshing juices and desserts. And, of course, no visit to Cuba would be complete without indulging in its world-renowned cocktails. Enjoy a mojito made with fresh mint and lime, a daiquiri at one of Hemingway’s favorite haunts, or a Cuba Libre by the pool. The vibrant culinary scene extends to paladares, privately owned restaurants often set in charming homes, where you can enjoy authentic Cuban dishes in a cozy, intimate setting. Whether dining at a paladar or a resort, the emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and traditional recipes ensures a memorable gastronomic journey for every visitor.

9. Historical Significance: Cuba has a rich history, from the revolution to its colonial past, and there is no shortage of museums, such as the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museum of the Revolution that one can visit to get a deeper insight into the country's complex narrative. 10. Inclusive Resorts: Many of Cuba's all-inclusive resorts, particularly in areas like Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria, are LGBTQIA+2S-friendly. These resorts offer a range of amenities and activities, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all guests.
